Indonesia Confirmed as Host Of ASEAN Para Games This July

INTERNATIONAL: The Asian Para Sports Federation (APSF) has given the go-ahead for Indonesia to host this year’s ASEAN Para Games this July. The decision was made at the APSF meeting held online yesterday, ensuring that the Games would take place for the first time since Malaysia hosted it in 2017.

The Philippines were supposed to host the Games in 2019 but canceled it due to financial difficulties. Vietnam was originally scheduled to host the Games last year but at first, postponed it to 2022 and eventually canceled it late last year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The Games is expected to be held in the city of Solo with 13 sports disciplines being contested from July 23-31. It would be just 11 months before Cambodia plays the host of the 12th edition of the ASEAN Para Games in June next year.

Indonesia’s path to hosting the Games was not all smooth as they needed to get the approval of both their government as well as the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) before being given the go-ahead.

Indonesia’s National Doping Agency (NADO) was put on the non-compliance list due to it being deemed to not have implemented an effective testing program and the nation was barred from hosting any international sporting events. WADA only removed Indonesia from its non-compliance list earlier this month, paving the way for Indonesia to host the Games.

The ASPF had given Indonesia until yesterday, to confirm their ability to host the ASEAN Para Games by producing confirmation of being removed from the WADA non-compliance list.

The big hurdle for the Indonesia Para Council is to convince the government to release the required budget.

The Indonesian Sports Ministry earlier had only confirmed that the Indonesian Paralympic Council could bid for the Games but would need to submit their budget for approval later to activate plans.

While Indonesia is hoping for a full turnout of member nations, some countries including neighbors Malaysia have indicated they would only send a watered-down contingent to the Games due to lack of funding and preparation time.
